By Collette Hooper (Executive Producer "Shooter")
In April this year, one of our staff, Caitlin Hooper, 13, had the opportunity to be in a short film (a small walk on part) being made in Boorowa NSW (temperature was 5 degrees at the time, it was -2 there this morning!).
Caitlin not only got to observe the best up and coming young film technicians in Australia but also such actors as Clayton Watson (The Matrix, House Husbands, Neighbours), Roy Billings (Aquamarine, Narnia, Jack Irish) and Mark Lee (A Place to Call Home, Gallipoli).
The short film, “Shooter” is directed by one of Emerald’s local identities, Andrew (Andy) Carbone (Howzat! Kerry Packer’s War, Waiting for Rain).
Andy is the one of the local Hawkins Family. He is the son of Rose Hawkins (Rose has a fabulous Airbnb house at Montville and guides Yoga Retreats at her home and overseas: Italy & India) and grandson of June and Colin Hawkins.
Andy didn’t take the usual path of: finish school, maybe a year travelling/working and then university.
No, instead 36 year old Andy, after attending the Emerald State School and 5 years boarding at St Joseph’s Nudgee College (where Andy often brought his good mates home to Emerald for fishing and shooting), went and worked as a Ringer from 1999 to 2003.
He worked 3 years in the Channel Country near Boulia on Brighton Downs Station, next to the Diamantina Lakes – which was a Kidman property and is now the 1.5 million acre Diamantina National Park. He then worked 2 years up in the Gulf of Carpentaria on Canobie Station, south of Normanton on the Cloncurry River, before coming back to the Emerald district to work as a contract musterer for 2 years on properties around Sapphire.
However, throughout this time, Andy was gathering local stories and observing rural life that was never seen by or shown to most Australians.
So, at the age of 24, Andy entered the Bachelor of Fine Arts (Acting) course at QUT, Brisbane. There he met his wife, Candice Storey (The Inbetweeners 2, Waiting for Rain) and Romany Lee (Lion, Aquarius Films) with all three then setting up Droving Productions to produce Australian movies set in the country.
In Andy’s second short film, Shooter, he pays a beautiful homage to two of his school friends and reveals how the shadow of suicide can affect us when our resilience takes a few blows. Although the film is not based on his friends’ lives, Andy hopes it will have a positive influence on the viewers – especially in country communities.
To finish the film, Andy and his crew need just $7000 to complete the editing and post production of this beautiful movie about a roo shooter and the decisions he has to make for his boys in a small rural town.
